I was born in Portland Oregon in 1946, however I have lived most of my life in Phoenix. I attended Madison #1 and Camelback Highschool. I then attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and Northern Arizona University prior to entering Dental school at Washington University in St. Louis in 1969. I passed the Arizona State Dental Board in 1973 and began practice in Scottsdale in that same year. I opened an office at 44th street and Camelback in March of 1974 and practiced at that location until May of 2013. I moved the office to 44th street and Campbell in May of 2013.
Following dental school I entered the MBA program in 1975 and was in that program at Arizona State University until 1979. I began an internship in Orthodontics through UCLA with Robert Ricketts in Pacific Palisades, CA in 1979 until 1983. I taught many courses in TMJ, Orthodontics and Reconstruction from 1982 to 1999. I began a radiology lab for TMJ radiology in 1981 called Camelback Mountain Oral Radiololgy which continued until 1991 when the lab was sold. I also started Lafayette Dental Laboratory with Steve Servry and Rick Durkee in 1981 which I maintained until my interest was sold to Mr. Durkee in 1997.
Dentistry has been my primary vocation for most of my life and to tell the truth, I love my profession. Actually, I love many aspects of my profession, but the most important part to me is the long term relationships I have with so many people. I feel like I have a life long commitment to them to maintain them in as healthy condition as possible.
While Dentistry is a huge part of my life, I have a number of other interests. I have been a life long skier and have a love for skiing that persists today. For most of the last 25 years I have enjoyed Heliskiing in British Columbia. While I will admit that Heliskiing is my favorite, Taos New Mexico has a dear place in my heart. There is nothing more fun than a week at the St. Bernard in Taos Ski Valley.
Photography is another major love in my life, especially wildlife photography. I do both land and underwater photography all over the world. My favorites on land would be Alaska for Brown bears and Africa for just about everything. The truth be known, gorillas in Rwanda and all cats in South Africa and Kenya are at the top of the list. As far as underwater, I am a lover of the big guys. Sharks hold a special place in my heart (Emma Tiger Shark in the Bahamas), Manta Rays in the Socorro Islands of Mexico and Whale Sharks in Cancun are right up there.
Traveling is part of the photography thing for me; I have been to 73 countries so far; I bet I will hit 125 before I am done with the traveling. This is a beautiful world with a lot of beautiful thing to photograph and see.
I enjoy my life and as far as practicing dentistry, I can see myself practicing in my new office for at least 20 years. That may be optimistic, but I cannot see myself just quitting to retire.
